The Roman Empire

Designer Notes

The Roman Empire is a simulation pitting the Human player against a panoply of historical adversaries determined to prevent the rise of Rome and its domination of the Mediterranean World.

Starting in 273BC, the simulation follows the endless series of wars that lead to the triumph of Rome. Early confrontations and victories over the powerful states of Carthage and Macedonia eventually involve Rome in the great Eastern wars against Asiatic empires like Pontus, Parthia, Egypt and Persia. Just over the horizon mighty barbarian nations like the Gauls, Celts and Germans threaten to breach the empire's defenses. Husband your resources in manpower and money for the day when these barbarians swarm over the borders and into the heart of the empire.

The Roman Empire requires the player to formulate a sound strategic plan to acquire and hold territory. The goal is to prevent revolts and turn these territories into provinces. Once that happens the process of Romanization can begin in which the conquered people totally identify with the empire. Over time the wealth and happiness of the provinces will increase furnishing the empire with more manpower and money. However it is not all smooth sailing. Ambitious generals and mutinous legionnaires can severely disrupt the best laid plans. The people too can become disenchanted with Roman rule if it is too harsh or shows itself unable to protect them.

The simulation is played in turns of 1 year. You will be surprised how fast time passes as the challenges of building and holding the classical world's greatest empire confound the best of players.
